3 lakes

Yesterday I left Christchurch and hitchhiked to Lake Tekapo. I had intended to spend the night there, but it was a little too touristy for my taste. So I caught another ride and ended up by Lake Pukaki. Although it was hard to tell because it was so misty. The visibility was only a few metres so I couldn't see the water at all. But I pitched my tent and stayed warm and happy in my sleeping bag while the dew settled heavy on the tent. In the morning the dew had turned to ice. After almost an hour of trying to pack my tent with freezing fingers I gave up. The zip was stiff with ice and I broke the tent on two different places. So in frustration I threw it in a bin (the season for camping is over anyway) and kept hitchhiking after taking a quick look at Lake Pukaki.

Two rides later I arrived in Wanaka by Lake Wanaka. The sun is shining, it's a beautiful day!

Gruff the goat

I'm still in Motukarara by ponyparties. But tonight will be my last night here. I'm going to miss all the animals (especially Gruff, the goat) and the people. I've had a great time here, it never got boring but it's time for me to explore beyond the horizon.

Feeding the animals

My main task at this wwoofing is to feed the animals. We get out-of-date food from New World (a grocery store). It's mainly barrels of vegetables and fruit and bags of bread. Some of it is perfectly fine, or just cosmetic failures, and we eat that ourselves. Lately we've had the fridge full of fruit and vegetables and there's no need to go shopping. We constantly have lots of bread, the kind that's baked in the store (it might be a little dry, but still great for making garlic bread or toasties).

And the animals always get something yummy. They all have specific preferences. The sheep really like bananas, the rabbits love celery and the pigs will eat just anything that comes their way :-)
This one got treated to chocolate cake, which is unusual. The sugary stuff we try to keep away from them

:-)
